Description and Application
ANFO, trade name SOLARANFO, is a granular explosive obtained by mixing 94.5% Ammonium Nitrate and 5.5% Fuel Oil. The most important factor for ANFO to have the desired properties is that the technical properties of the raw materials used are suitable for ANFO production. SOLARANFO is not a cap-sensitive explosive which has to be initiated with a cap-sensitive explosive. SUPERPOWER 90 cap-sensitive emulsion product is very suitable for this initiating process. SOLARANFO is not recommended to be used by itself in wet holes as it is not a water-resistant explosive. It could either be used in dry holes by itself or in less watery or wet holes after the water level is passed with emulsion explosives.
SOLARANFO is mostly used in medium and large diameter blastholes. It is recommended for 2.0 inch (51 mm) and larger diameters. SOLARANFO is used as main explosive through bottom and column charges. Its free-flowing granular form allows easy hole charging in vertical hole applications.
Field of Use
- Open-pit blasting,
- Production and stripping operations in surface coal mining,
- Production and stripping operations in surface metal mining,
- Blasting operations in quarries,
- Open excavations in dam and highway works,
- Raw material quarries of cement and lime factories,
- Special blasting applications.
Advantages
- Provides high job safety,
- Low sensitivity to friction and impact,
- Cost-friendly,
- Easy to handle. Assures easy charging of vertical holes,
- Provides better fragmentation.

Sensitivity
SOLARANFO is not a cap-sensitive explosive. It has to be initiated by a cap-sensitive emulsion explosive. Initiation by using the cap-sensitive emulsion, SUPERPOWER90, would give the best result in practice.
